Avoid the most common digital marketing mistakes

Mistake #1 - Boosting Facebook posts just because Facebook pre-empt you to. Have you seen something like the below? Have you followed the prompts “just because”?

We see this every day in our meetings with local business all across Australia but you don’t need to follow the orders of the Facebook algorithm.

Solution: Have a strategy by first considering what you want to achieve… is it to increase foot traffic to a brick and mortars store, to build presence and awareness, lead generation or something else? Once you know your objective you can consider what content will help you get to where you want to go and then decide what is worth putting money behind and what you can run organically (without any additional spend). Putting a spend behind a post that has no purpose is like betting on a horse that isn’t in the race.

It’s important to know boosting a post is different to a Facebook Ad. While each one is you giving money to Facebook so your content can go further, both functions have pros and cons. If you want to learn more about The differences between Facebook boosting and Facebook Ads send us a message on Facebook.

MISTAKE #2 - Posting content that you like. It’s not all about you (it’s unfortunate, we know). You first need to consider WHO you are talking to. Something that a business owner finds relevant, valuable or funny might not be what the audience is interested in.

Solution: Think about who your audience is, who do you target? Most social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, Mailchimp etc. have the capability to allow you to see who your audience is. Will they like, what you like, or are you different? Once you know who you are talking to, you can skew how you are talking and what you’re talking about. For instance if I am talking to an 18-27 year old audience on behalf of a local concert I might say “These artists have never been seen in a line up together before it’s going to be CRAAAAAY. Don’t miss out on tix, make sure your besties are ready to get theirs too” #yas #artist. Alternatively, if I am talking to a more mature audience my caption would be very different.

MISTAKE #3 – not paying attention to your analytics… Marketing isn’t a guessing game but it can be a trial and error game… you will only know if your trial worked if you check how it performed. All social platforms have some way to measure the performance of posts.

Solution: On Facebook and Instagram, the way to track your performance is in Insights.
